“In Brazil, this inward push of agriculture and meat production has led to the devastation of 80% of the Cerrado, which is recognized as one the richest grasslands in the world in terms of biodiversity. The degradation of this habitat, which occupies a quarter of Brazilian land, has drained and polluted the hydrological basins of the region, considered the principal water sources of the country” —Brazil: Mozambique Cedes Land to Brazilian Agribusiness · Global Voices

How to answer a professor → mleddy.blogspot.com

bobulate:

Stefan Hagemann with advice on how to answer a professor, but really on how to answer anyone:

Be interested in a lot of things: Some questions are designed to test your command of a set of facts, and some leave little room for interpretation. Once in awhile, a question might even permit a “yes” or “no” answer. But often you’ll be dealing with open-ended questions, ones about which there is much to say and from many angles. Recognize that most open-ended questions range across academic disciplines and areas of interest, and do your best to develop a good grasp of the world around you. Good question-answerers read widely, talk to their peers and professors, attend on-campus events such as plays and concerts, and (I’m guessing here) subscribe to PBS and NPR. Good question-answerers also listen. If you know a little bit about the world around you and make an effort to experience your immediate environment, you may be surprised by your ability to add outside knowledge to your answers. Broad experience equals (or at least increases the chance for) serendipity.

Geographical Journalism – Internal Migration in Brazil

Your assignment is to conduct an interview to gain knowledge and understanding about migration in Brazil, whilst improving interviewing skills.

Choosing an Informant:

You will need to select someone who is an internal migrant! This is easily done by asking where they were born and when they migrated to Sao Paulo.  If the person moved to Sao Paulo when they were very young they may not remember the details you need, therefore pick someone else.

Select someone who both interests you and who you think will provide useful information about migration. You will need to think about how you will introduce yourself.

People you may want to interview:

The best people to interview will be the ones with the strongest push and pull factors.  Employees such as cleaners, gardeners, security, kitchen staff.

Ethics:

Always be polite; treat people as you like to be treated, explain that the interview is for a student project and that it will remain completely confidential. Emphasise that you will not use the person’s name unless they give you permission to do so.

How to conduct an interview

Once the informant has agreed to a time and a (suitable) place….

1. Make sure you are familiar with the migration topic before you start

2. Before your interview, jot down some questions, in case the conversation dries up/and or to target information.  Make sure these are open ended questions, that cannot be answered with a ‘’yes’’ or a ‘’no’’ answer. These open – ended questions usually begin with ‘’who’’, ‘what’, ‘when’ and ‘how’’.

3. Decide on some form of data collection. You can make notes of the important bits as you go, or record it and then make notes afterwards.  There is no need for a full transcript as this takes a lot of time.

Writing up theinterview

Introduction – background information

Discuss the causes of migration of your informant.

Describe the migration process of your informant.

Evaluate the problems and benefits of living in a new place/country for your informant

Conclusion

Try not to be too descriptive.  Do any of the theories we have studied in class relate to your informant?  Could you add any maps or diagrams to add detail and evidence to your write up?

Assessment Criteria

The interview write up will be assessed using the mark bands (15 marks)

Due:

The interview write up should be handed in on Tuesday 6th September
